Mid Century with a Modern Twist (Before & After)
The moment I saw Scituate, our small seaside town, I fell in love. I think that is how most people feel when they come here for the first time – the beautiful harbor filled with colorful fishing boats, the sandy beaches, the majestic lighthouse and the harbor lined with quaint shops and restaurants. When we first moved here from England we stayed out on Cedar Point with my parents, near the lighthouse.
My good friend (and amazing photographer) Kjeld Mahoney is able to capture the magic of Scituate in his photography. His pieces are absolutely beautiful. We decided to devote this Mid Century Modern Dresser to Scituate:

You probably want to see how it looked before, right? It was a 1960s Mid Century Modern Dresser by Bassett with the original wood finish:

This piece had a few scratches but fantastic bones, so it was a perfect candidate to be painted. I cleaned it and prepped it and then did two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey and dry brushed Pure White. I wanted the finish to look like driftwood with Kjeld’s beautiful image of the lighthouse being the focus.

Here you can see a close up of the painted finish:

The chalk paint is sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear wax. Kjeld’s amazing image finishes the piece and is sealed with acrylic.
I love how his image gives the effect of walking out onto the rocks, looking at the crashing waves on the harbor.
This Mid Century Modern Dresser is available for sale at the Kjeld Mahoney Gallery on Front Street in Scituate Harbor. It is the first of many collaborations (we hope)!
Would love to hear what you think!
