Modern Coastal Pool House Reveal
Shiplap walls, white painted floors, and streamlined built-ins create an airy, outdoor retreat. I’m so excited to be sharing our modern coastal pool house reveal today!
Four years ago I partnered with the Home Depot to create a she shed in our backyard. I’ve loved having a space to retreat away from our sometimes chaotic home. You know how it can be with young children and dogs.
Last year we put in a pool, you can see the reveal post here and things to consider when installing a pool here.
As part of the pool and deck construction we moved the shed closer to make it part of the pool landscape. This year I added some teak furniture and Luke built the beautiful window box. We decided, together, that a pool house would be just perfect for the shed. We bought a little fridge last summer and some fun chairs but that’s as far as we got. Luke and I did all the landscaping last summer and we just ran out of time. So this was a big goal for us.
Since January I’ve brainstormed ideas. I shared my pool house inspiration here.
As you all know, Luke is very gifted at woodworking and I told him my ideas for the new pool house. I wanted the small space to be packed with function and also feel coastal and modern.
Here’s how it came out:

If you’ve been following along on Insta Stories you may have seen our progress. The shiplap walls (original to the She Shed makeover) got a fresh coat of paint and the floor also got a few coats of white floor paint. This is the same color I used in our sunroom and you can see more about application here and the sunroom here.
We wanted this space to be an extension of the pool, where friends and family can mix cocktails, or grab a cold soda from the fridge. If people want to change into a swimsuit, or grab a towel, before jumping into the pool.
We bought a stock cabinet from Grossman’s for $160 and Luke built a gorgeous maple counter on top. The oil rubbed hardware from D. Lawless makes a modern statement with its elongated lines.
Aren’t they lovely?
I’m so IN LOVE with the butcher block counter Luke created. I sealed it with Woca Oil in natural and Conor helped me buff it. I’ve used this oil inside our home, as well, on our farmhouse table and small kitchen island.
The wood adds so much warmth to the all white space.
We also added a raw edge shelf, made from the same maple wood.
We kept the raw edge because I felt it added a rustic affect. Having pieces from nature that aren’t too perfect, adds to the casual mood of the space.
In my design plans I also wanted to have a hang out space. How fun are these chairs? Our chairs are slightly different color to the ones linked.
You may not believe it, but they’re so comfortable and I love the natural woven texture. They kind of bounce when you sit on them. I got the pair on sale last summer. I think there’s still a great price! I found the table last week at Target. It’s also on super sale as they’re trying to get rid of all the summer decor.
It fits perfectly with my black and white theme. 😉
On the other side of the pool house Luke built gorgeous built-in seating.
It has two sections that lift up for hidden storage. We have lots of outdoor cushions we bring in every night and I wanted a space to store them. The slatted front allows the pillows and cushions to breathe inside. I’ll be sharing full build plans for the bench and the counters in a few weeks.
I adore pillows, as many of you know. My husband thinks they breed in our house. In the pool house I’ve only added two – a woven outdoor pillow from Christmas Tree Shops and a black and white cabana striped.
We’ve hung lovely hooks on the far wall for towels and hats.
The hooks are by D. Lawless and are such a great price point.
As you can see there are black accents throughout.
One element I love is the swimmers. My mom gifted them to us last summer and I’ve hung onto them since then waiting to do this space over.
She thought they looked like Luke and me. 😉
They make such a fun statement.
Another fun black accent is the pendant light.
It looks gorgeous at night with that vintage style bulb on.
I fell in love with the woven oversized mirror. It was a happy HomeGoods find and is by Tommy Bahama. I found it back in March and it’s sat in Luke’s office waiting to be hung up.
It makes the 8 x 10 pool house feel bigger by adding more light and giving the illusion of depth.
I also added these books, which my neighbor was giving away.
My boys love mysteries and sci fi, so they’re excited to read them this summer.
Of course a coastal pool house wouldn’t be complete without shells.
I’ve sprinkled a few on the butcher block counter.
I’ve added even more higher up in the eaves.
Our beach treasures are nestled up high – driftwood, clam shells, and oysters the boys have found on the beach.
I hope you all enjoyed the tour of our modern coastal pool house. We loved working on this space together and are loving some quiet time out here, out of the hot sun.
Max is color coordinated, too. Ha! Ha!
We’re delighted with how everything turned out.
I’d also like to say a huge thank you to my friend, Derrick, over at D. Lawless for sending such lovely hardware to compliment this space.
The boys and I will be heading out of town tomorrow. Luke has a sabbatical from work and we’re flying to California. I’m so excited as I’ve dreamed of traveling California my whole life, 42 years. We’re driving from San Diego through LA up the Coastal Highway into San Francisco and ending with a few days in wine country. We’re all very excited. I’m bringing my camera so will try and capture all the beauty and inspiration to share with all of you. Things will be quiet here on the blog as we’re not bringing computers. My mom will be watching the dogs and she’s excited to have a little mini break here in our home. I’d love to hear your comments or any questions you have about the pool house. I’ll also share a full source list below.

Thank you, Pamela, it’s a great mix of practical and relaxation. I’m so excited to be visiting your home state. It’s been a dream of mine since FOREVER!
Danielle this is great and the butcher block adds so much warmth. Looking at the chairs I said wonder they bounce a bit when sitting? I giggled when you mentioned that. You created a wonderful spot and your shell collection as a nice touch too.
Enjoy
Cindy
Max loves being in the middle of the action.
First, enjoy your trip to CA!! We have also enjoyed vacations to those areas of CA too. You will come home full of inspiration.
Your pool house looks great, and will serve you well. Luke created such beautiful counters tops and built-ins. Enjoy!!
Can you tell me what paint colors were used on the outside of the shed and the door? I LOVE the color combo!!
Hi April, the shed siding is actually medium gray siding. It’s similar in color to gray owl or stonington gray. We color matched the shutters and doors to our home’s which is Buxton Blue by Benjamin Moore in high gloss.
