Today, I’m sharing with you a little table makeover I did for my mom. Here she is in all her gilded glory:
I’m calling her Nagance – that was my mom’s made up nickname when her and her sister used to pretend to speak Italian. My mom’s real name is Nancy so maybe it was a combination of Nancy + Elegance. Ha!
Anyway, I’m a horrible daughter since my mom has been wanting me to paint this table since we went to our workshop with Nancy at the Sea Rose Cottage. I know, that was quite a while ago, March 2012…
I told you I was a horrible daughter. You may want to see the before. I shared it on facebook the other week:
Before
The table leg needed gluing and the top was in rough shape from years of abuse (not from my mom, but by it’s original owner).
I first sanded the top with a palm sander and applied dark walnut stain by Minwax and sealed this with a few layers of Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil. Then I painted the bottom in Versailles Chalk Paint®. Annie Sloan says this color is a “Soft delicate lightly yellowed dusky green that is sophisticated and gentle”. The perfect color for this table! Here’s how the table looks with the stain and paint:
Doesn’t the table have such pretty details and curves? I may have left Nagance this way if we were going for a modern look, but we wanted her to look time worn and gilded.
After two coats of clear wax, I applied my dark wax mixture:
I find it easier to work with the wax when I mix it with odorless mineral spirits. I also lighten it a little with clear wax. The mixture should have a chocolate pudding like consistency. When applying the wax, work in sections, apply with either a wax brush or rag (I like using chip brushes when working in small areas). Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe away the access. This picture is with wax loaded on and yet to be wiped away. On this piece I did this process but also proceeded to take dark wax from the can as I really wanted that aged look!
Next up was gilding wax. I love this stuff:
It is a tiny pot of gold. I get mine from Nancy at the Sea Rose Cottage. It is so much fun to work and can be applied with your pinky! You used this product at the very end, kind of a finishing touch. I highlighted some details of the table with this. My mom loves gold!
Here she is in the bedroom rich with warm wood, gilded pieces, beautiful still life images, and shabby chic bedding:
That is the story of how Nagance – found her elegance again.
love it! i love how the top seems to float!
