New Ralph Lauren Rug in the Dining Room
I love light and airy decor and, of course, blue and white! Today I’m sharing how I added a touch of elegance and how simply reconfiguring the dining room and adding a new Ralph Lauren rug made the room feel completely new and fresh.

Our Old Rug
Okay, we’ve had the same rug in our dining room for 8 years. I LOVED our Safavieh Rug BUT after 8 years with two boys and two dogs – lots of vacuum sessions and some sickness with dogs the rug was looking less than fresh.
It really stood up to a good beating, but it was certainly time for a change. Here’s how our rug was looking:

I loved that Moroccan element and I also loved the price. The bold blue and white always made my heart happy when I caught a glimpse of it. I also really loved the price. We paid something like $250 on Overstock (which is now Bed Bath and Beyond) for this rug.
Max was really sick last week. He’s better now, but the tired rug got one more dose of dog sickness and I told Luke I thought it was time to do something new in here.
A New Ralph Lauren Rug for the Dining Room
I knew I wanted something different but not sure what. So we took a ride up to HomeGoods. Our local HomeGoods has a wonderful selection of large rugs hanging in the back of the store. We flipped through all of them taking into account our furnishings, white walls, and my love for Cornishware.
We saw a few that could work and then we saw this one:

We both loved it and got worried when another couple started looking at it. This was the only one without a price tag. We asked an associate and they said it was $399, which we thought was an unbelievable price for an 8 x 10 100% wool rug.
I checked online and it’s compared at $1300 for that same size. This is the rug on Wayfair – it’s on sale for $924 (30% off in case you like it and can’t find it at HomeGoods).
I, of course, couldn’t wait to get the rug down. So the next day we vaccuumed and cleaned then rolled out the rug.
Max immediately liked it, while Poppy didn’t seem to notice:

The lighting isn’t great because the sun was going down but I got a few in progress shots:

Look how pretty it is. The pile is gorgeous.

I love the design and the the muted blues. We decided to center the medallion in the middle of the room. Before we brought the table back in I had the idea of reconfiguring the layout. What if we turned the table?

So Luke and Conor brought it in this way, and guess what? I really like it like this. It really makes the room feel spacious.
Our Dining Room Before
If you’re new around here, I thought I’d show you want it looked like before.
The dining table used to run the length of the room and it always felt like the people on the ends were in the doorways.

Here’s another view:

I know the above photo is a little dark, but you can kind of see how the table takes up the whole room with not much space for movement through. With the new layout the room feels so much more spacious and that we could even fit more chairs around for parties.
The New Elegant Layout
I, of course, took this opportunity to do a bit of styling and spring jooging to showcase this little refresh. Who knew a new rug and shifting furniture around could invigorate the space.
Here’s how it looks now:
A glimpse from the kitchen (please don’t mind the boxes they’re for shipping items for our online shop).

I had so much fun playing with flowers to style the space. Perfect for welcoming spring! I feel like I could write a whole other post about the flowers so I’ll do that.

Here you can see through the columns looking in from the living room:

The Next Morning…

I had just taken these photos and the next morning woke up to see Poppy had been sick all over the new rug. Just my luck!!!! I should have left the 8 year old rug down! Most of the stains are out but there are still two remaining which I’m working hard to remove. Keep your fingers crossed. Life sure is never dull with kids and dogs!
More Ralph Lauren Rugs I Like
I really wanted to go with 100% wool and I didn’t want to do jute or seagrass because it’s really hard to clean up sickness with the dogs. Here are some more Ralph Lauren rugs I like:

I LOVE the table turned this way and the rug is gorgeous!! I hear you with rugs and dogs! I adopted 2 one-ish year olds this past fall, Jack and Lola. Neither had been potty trained! 🙁 Needless to say, I had to invest in a BISSELL steam cleaner, lol!
Hi Donna, It was funny Luke and Conor were about to bring the table back into the room and I was like, “Hey, I wonder what it would be like if we turned the table?” We tried it and couldn’t believe how much bigger the room feels! Jack and Lola sound lovely. I love their names. Aw, dogs are the best but it’s hard when you have to clean up messes. Our BISSELL steam cleaner just arrived and we used it yesterday. When area is looking so much better and when area still needs a bit more steam and soap.… Read more »
Love the new rug! What a great find.
Thanks, Diane! I’m so delighted by the soft blues in this space now.
Your new rug is perfection! It’s so sad that the pets always know the most cherished place in the house to get sick 😔. I’m always in love with your beautiful dining room hutch. Any tips on how to find one like that?
Btw my dining room table, purchased some years ago, is almost identical to yours!!! Nice work Luke!
Hi Annie, I know how do they know? I was like, “the two upstairs runners (which need replacing) would have been a better option, Poppy!” Aw, well, we got a BISSELL steam cleaner and steaming away. It’s almost out. I found the Welsh Dresser on Facebook Yard Sale – I’d been searching for a long time. I’d put things like “scrub pine” “vintage hutch” “pine shelves” etc in while searching. You also might want to take a look at Vintage Retriever’s site – https://www.vintageretriever.com/collections/antique-vintage, she gets lots of scrub pine in. Didn’t Luke do an amazing job? The top is… Read more »
Love your new rug and dining room!! The rug is elegant and softens the room. The table turned does make it look larger. I also think the Welsh hutch pops. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Kathy, thank you! It really is amazing how some simple and small changes can totally change the look of the room! My Welsh dresser always makes me happy and love decorating it for the seasons. The daffs and stripes are so happy right now. Danielle xx
Hi Danielle! The new rug is beautiful! I love the soft blues. And the new configuration looks great. The view from the other rooms are so good. Have you tried Nature’s Miracle? It uses enzymes to get rid of organic messes. I have always had good luck with it. Oh, the messes I have cleaned up through the years….
We have used Nature’s Miracle in the past. This time around we used Resolve for Pets and also tried out the BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner. It made the rug a little furry we’re the worst of the diarrhea was but it’s clean. Sigh.
Love the rug! I purchased the exact same rug at HomeGoods last month for my new home. It will go in the front sitting room. I also purchased the same rug in a darker blue for my living room. Two 8 x 10 wool rugs for $800 was definitely a good deal.
Hi Stephanie, Oh, how fun. Congratulations on your new home. Oooooh, we didn’t see it in a darker blue. Sounds lovely! Danielle xx
Hi Danielle, Love the new rug. I like the vintage feel it gives to match the house better. I have a 100% wool rug that also has been through kids and dogs and 30 years. It wears like iron and actually still looks new. When I had an elderly dog I was told to just use diluted hydrogen peroxide. Blot in layers….never saturate. I used old towels for the final blotting up of the solution and let it air dry lifted up….by sticking something under to elevate…like a shoe box or a piece of wood. It works perfect!!! It is… Read more »
