New Window Treatments

Our new window treatments add privacy but also a feeling of cozy warmth to our coastal bedroom.

Bedroom with white curtains and roman shades

I realize our bedroom makeover is taking quite awhile, but I’m going slow on purpose. I find by “slow decorating” I really make better choices. I’m not a serial redecorator. Of course, I’ll change up bedding or pillows but with big ticket things I like to choose items that are timeless. If you missed previous bedroom posts you can see the inspiration, the lighting, and our woven rattan bed. Part of the delays, is due to the current world events. There are so many delays currently in the supply chain. I really wanted linen curtains from Ikea and they are still out of stock. Soooooo……. I found something different that I think I might actually like better.

To refresh your memory this was the mood board for our bedroom:

Selecting New Window Treatments

Window with roman shades and long white drapes

Our home is a 1920s Dutch colonial and this was the original primary bedroom in our home when it was built. I love the dark woodwork, which is original to our home. When we repaired the ceilings in this room we installed a new picture rail with dark stain.

I knew I wanted soft and airy curtains and had dreamed of using the Dytag linen curtain from Ikea. This item is still out of stock. I have linen curtains in white in our old bedroom and in beige in our living room and dining room. The price point is great for linen $60 a pair.

I kept refreshing the page and it is still out of stock as I write this post.

So, at Ikea we looked at different curtains and ended up going with Silverlonn. It’s a cotton panel but has a beautiful texture that looks like raw linen. Here you can see the texture:

It’s so soft. The panel is light filtering which is lovely in our north facing bedroom.

The best part is the panels were sooooooo affordable. You won’t believe the price – $14.99 a pair! My husband really liked that price 😉 I love the look.

Close up ikea curtain

I opted for simple white rods and finials. I thought about doing brass but I didn’t want ones eye to be drawn upward.

Tips for hanging curtains

In order to make the room feel bigger and brighter and the ceilings higher, I like to do the following:

  • Hang the rod a little higher to give the illusion of higher ceilings
  • Extend the rod out beyond the wind to allow more natural light to come into the room
  • Allow the curtains to pool on the floor – to give the illusion of a bigger space

We were limited by shell sconces with how much we could extend the curtain out.

Choosing Roman Shades

I love using natural woven shades to give an island coastal feel to rooms. The woven texture is so calming.

I went with a warm honey hued woven shade from Select Blinds in Antiqua Honey. I wanted to pick up our warm wood trim and the golden hues of our woven rattan bed.

We ordered cordless and opted for a black out option as it’s a bedroom. The black out shades really work, our room is so dark when the shades are down.

You can see a close up of the shade here. I love the texture!

They are so well made and they arrived very quickly. They were having a sale when we ordered them so they blinds were 35% off with an additional 10% off.

The woven texture also picks up the weave on our sconces:

Tips for choosing roman shades

The weave, texture, color and pattern all contribute to how a room feels. If you have white trim you might want to go with something different or more pale. Here are some tips:

  • Always get swatches to see them in your room. Lighting and room color will change the look and feel.
  • Cordless options are more expensive but a safer option when you have young children and pets
  • There are different lining options. Unlined will filter some light so this option is good for a room that you want light to come in (we did this in our kids playroom), privacy lining makes it so people can’t see in (we opted for this in our living room), black out means it will completely block light so is perfect for bedrooms.

What do you think of our new window treatments? They really soften the space and make it feel airy and cozy.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I’ll answer those. Or, if you’d like me to do a blog post dedicated to roman shades. We’ve used a few different ones in our home.

My daughter has the same curtains in her and my granddaughter’s bedrooms. The quality is amazing for that price point. Unlike yours, I shortened them for her and they look great.

I agree! I love Roman shades, have even made my own, back in the day. Now I’d like to have them again because I don’t want to cover the woodwork around my windows. But I haven’t done it because the shades I typically see don’t pull up far enough. Most seem to cover almost a quarter of the glass – I’m afraid to lose that much light during the day as my rooms tend to be rather dark.

Hello Danielle,
Your room is coming along nicely. I like these curtains better and with the price it seems to be a win~win!!! The shades look great with your new bed. My favorite part is…..the view of the tree lined street from the right side window!!! So cozy and warm looking. Like from a 1940’s old black and white movie!!! Peaceful charm. Almost like an oil painting hanging.
It appears you don’t have any snow left? No???
Have a great weekend!!!

Lolololo….I liked the view so much I thought, “I should enlarge it and look one more time”. Lololo!!!! It is a roof line with a tree!!! Not enlarged it looks to be a perfect in perspective tree lined street…to me. Do you see that from the pictures? It is still nice and nice to be upstairs to get a full view of the neighborhood!!!

I love both the curtains and the roman shades. These shades are what I’d like for our little lake house. I want to triple check the measurements though as I know they have to hang inside the window. I would love to order these curtains but need 84″ length and it seems their curtains don’t come in that length. I love your bedroom.
