No Sew Drop Cloth Tree Skirt
Happy Monday, Everyone! For all of those who live in the States, I hope you all had a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving! We had a great long weekend filled with yummy food, crafts and a trip into Boston. I have a fun, easy, and affordable DIY for you today!
Last year, I made drop cloth stockings. Do you remember them? You can see them here.
I had wanted to do a matching tree skirt, but I didn’t get to it last year. But I did this year and I’m going to share all my tips for a No Sew Drop Cloth Tree Skirt today!
We put the tree up! Hooray! Conor was so excited to help putting the tree up:
It is a flocked tree from Lowe’s. Funnily enough I also got the drop cloth at Lowe’s (I think a separate trip). It looks so pretty and still is undecorated, but I’m loving the white ‘snow’ and pretty lights. I knew I wanted my tree skirt to be very simple. I like the shabby chic look but knew I only wanted one ruffle.
How to Make A No Sew Drop Cloth Tree Skirt
Materials
– Drop Cloth (I got 6 x 9 but have loads left for furniture) – Fabric Scissors – Glue Gun – Ribbon – Cutting Mat (helpful) – RulerMethod
Step 1 – Wash your drop cloth fabric. Washing it makes it so soft. I love the feel of it. Then you want to fold your fabric in half to create a square.
Step 2 – Cut excess fabric and fold again, corner to corner.
Step 3 – Since we were making a 4ft tree skirt, we wanted to make a 2ft radius so measured some string (2 ft length) and tied it to a pencil. We held it at the center point while we drew a quarter circle.
Step 4 – Cut all four layers along the quarter circle. Make sure you have good, sharp fabric scissors for this. At the center point, cut a small bit of fabric off in a curve. We did one inch because we have an artificial tree, you may want to make it bigger for a real one.
Step 5 – Cut a straight slit from the edge. This is the back of your skirt.
Step 6 – Cut 4 pieces of ribbon in 12 inch strips.
You may remember that I got this lovely ribbon at Home Goods a little while ago. I love it!
Step 7 – From your extra drop cloth fabric, cut 4 inch strips of cloth (this will make your ruffle). On your tree skirt measure one inch in. I marked along the edge with a watercolor pencil.
Step 8 – Heat up your glue gun. I was going to sew this. I had the sewing machine all set up and then I just thought this would be quicker and it was!!! I used 5 hot glue sticks, but it is good to always have extra.
Step 9 – Bead the glue along your line on the skirt. I found 4 inches was the most I could do because I was out in the sunroom which was freezing but if you are in a warmer room you may be able to apply more glue at a time.
Step 10 – Place the 4 inch wide strips on the glue. You want to bunch the fabric up so it puckers. Don’t worry. It will look a bit messy while you’re doing it but will be fine once it is done.
Step 11 – Once you’ve gone around the skirt with your ruffle, it is time to flip it over and glue the ribbon. I glued one set of ribbons closer to the top of the tree skirt and one set further down. Make sure you’ve line the ribbon up.
And that is it! For less than $10 you have a brand new tree skirt!
Here are how the bows came out (just wish I was a bit better at tying bows. I still tie upside down).
I love the lace detail! Here’s how the rest of the skirt looks.
Here it is with the tree lit!
What do you think? Will you give it a try.
