On Trend – Moody Wall Colors
Warm hues and deep, rich shades; how on trend moody wall colors help to make interiors feel more inviting, cozy, and calm.
The majority of our home is painted in whites, creams, tans and grays, but for quite some time, I’ve wanted to paint Luke’s office a deep, dark shade. As you guys know, Luke is English and I was dreaming of an English study for his home office. We already have dark woodwork but imagine for me – wingback chairs, dusty books, cups of tea, falling leaves outside the window and beautiful book cases filled with brass and leather trinkets.
This post is sponsored by my friends at Benjamin Moore. I received some paint and supplies in exchange for this post. All thoughts, beliefs and ideas are my own.
I’m excited to share with you a new paint line by Benjamin Moore.
Century is the most luxurious paint I’ve ever used. The paint is mixed in small batches and comes in 75 beautiful curated shades. The colors are gorgeous and inspired by art and nature. The color card is hand painted. Here you can see a range of the gorgeous colors:
Century is the world’s first Soft Touch Matte paint with an amazing depth of color and soft touch finish. What does that mean exactly? Well, when you touch it, it feels like soft leather. I’m talking about the kidd leather gloves possibly from Italy. I wish I could have you touch our walls. Too bad blogs don’t have that capability.
My local Benjamin Moore retailer is Hingham Lumber and I’d seen the paint there quite a while ago. I knew when I saw the beautiful colors, and felt the samples, that this was the paint I wanted to use in Luke’s office. I had previously painted the office for me and used Revere Pewter. When we bought the house this room was a mustard color. The whole room, after the first makeover, had a French feel but as I told you we’re going English!
Here’s a look at the walls before (snapped this while moving the furniture out):
Part of me has always felt that the warm wood and the cool undertones of the paint were competing and I wanted to find a shade that would, not only compliment the dark wood work, but make it feel rich and luxurious.
I bought 4 samples of Century back in April and Conor and I painted them in the office during the summer.
We tried out Delft (top), Seraphinite (next to door & under delft), Deep Iolite (left) and Blue Muscari (right).
I usually can pick colors without painting samples, but since this is so dramatic and saturated I wanted to get it right. I thought we would go with Blue Muscari but it looked too blue against the woodwork. Deep Iolite looked purple in the room. Seraphinite was the winner!
This color is dreamy. Seraphinite is named after a mineral mined in Russia and Syria by the same name. It’s a gray, green stone with the name meaning the biblical seraphs or seraphim angels due to the feather resemblance of feathers in the stone. This stone is said to have calming and healing properties. Luke loves green, and the green undertones made the woodwork feel warm.
To paint the walls I used a 2″ nylon and polyester brush and 3/8″ nap shed resistant roller both made specifically for use with Century Paint.
I did all the cutting in and edges with the brush, then rolled the rest of the walls. We have textured walls which sometimes can be difficult to paint, but this paint went on wonderfully.
I did one coat on Tuesday and one coat on Wednesday, last week.
Do you want to see a sneak peek?
I also painted the radiator cover and love how it has an old world look now.
Doesn’t it look rich and sophisticated?
While this room still isn’t finished, I have lots more I want to do in here. You can see just how dramatic the makeover was by changing one single thing, the wall color. Century Paint by Benjamin Moore helped to transform this space with its depth of color and moody feel.
It really feels like an English study already.
I dragged in a few elements to give you a better idea of where we’re going:
Every study needs a wing back chair.
Nautical elements, feathers and rich wooden furniture.
I’m excited over the next few weeks to share more updates of this space as we transform it into an English study. Luke now loves working in here. A huge thank you to my friends at Benjamin Moore and my wonderful friends in the paint department at Hingham Lumber. I could’t have transformed the walls without this beautiful paint.
What do you guys think of the new color?

This color is dreamy and the you described how it feels makes me want to run out and buy a can.
It looks fantastic, Danielle. It’s such a rich color and up against the gorgeous woodwork it’s fabulous. Great choice.
I have read about this new paint in a couple of magazines but had no idea how rich looking it would be.
That room looks so much like rooms I have
seen in B&B’s in England and Wales.
I am a “blue” lover but that green is masculine and gorgeous at the same time.
Great choice for lord of the manor.
Danielle , I love the paint color and like several other readers, I want to run out to get a can. I have two rooms yet to paint and now that the weather is cooler, those projects have moved to the front of the list. I’ll be at my Benjamin Moore retailer looking at samples today!
I am going to live vicariously through your makeover since I love this look but not quite ready to make such a change. I love it paired with all that rich wood. Look forward to seeing it finished, Danielle.
I absolutely love it and it does look sophisticated. Gives his office a grand feel .
I think I am going to our BM retailer we have used for years to check this out for my hubby.
He’s a yellow guy and hoping they have a rich golden or taupe more brown undertones
Can’t wait to see it finished
Have a super day
Cindy
It looks so beautiful! Especially with your gorgeous wood. After he’s all moved in, you can get him a puffy shirt and he’ll be all set!
Christine
The color of the study is wonderful, it makes the wood so rich too! Great choice.
Beautiful, beautiful, love the color, it will be a great room to spend time in. Will be waiting for those updates.
I’m so over looking at white everywhere—-anchoring a room with color—gives it some sort of permanence you don’t with floating-in-the-clouds, whites. Perfect for a study—and an ‘old’ English feel!. Love it!
Beautiful color! The paint sounds amazing. I love the saturated colors.
Love the new deep color against that beautiful wood, looking forward to the final reveal.
Pat
Love it and very intrigued! I’ll be over to check it out.
That paint looks delicious! I love the saturated colors….reminds me of Annie Sloan’s paint…I can’t wait to see the finished room
Love the color and I’m thinking about a similar SW color for our office (with darker wood). My only dilemma with yours and mine is the ceiling. I don’t like the bright ceiling but also don’t want to go that dark.
You could always tint the ceiling and do a different percentage if you don’t want it to be bright white or dark like the walls. They can do paint in different percentages.
