Our Home on the Scituate Arts Association Tour

On Sunday I had the chance to tour some fantastic homes in Scituate. Many of you were asking for a glimpse of our home on the Scituate Arts’ Association Tour.

Blue and White Christmas Dining Room

I hadn’t really intended to write this post.

I thought you guys might actually be bored of seeing our home decked out for Christmas, I shared some photos here and here already. I got so many requests to share a glimpse of how our home looked on Sunday. I realize many of you, who read the blog, are dotted around the US and abroad. So thought it would be fun for you to see….

It is quite exciting and also quite nerve wracking to open ones home for a holiday house tour.

I was worried people would find our home small.

The kitchen dated.

The playroom a mess.

Hundreds of people came through our home and were charmed by our mince pies, pretty woodwork and collections.

Phew!!!

I have to say a HUGE thank you to my husband and children who made this possible. Luke took the boys and dogs to my mom’s house. The kids and Luke helped tidy the house, decorate, and bake. I couldn’t have done it without them. A thank you also to my mom who was my second pair of eyes and who wrote beautiful hand lettered signs for me. We had so much fun touring the homes, along with my friends, Barbara and Cynthia. It was really a fun day.

I also would like to say a special thank you to the Scituate Arts Association for asking me to take part. I never thought my home would be on a house tour. It was great fun to take part. A thank you to Janet, Dottie and Thresa for all their work. As part of the tour, I was able to select several oil paintings which would hang in our home. I chose costal oils that had special meaning to our family. I’m a big believer that the items we choose to bring into our home (even if just for a home tour) should have special meaning and resonance. A few of Dottie’s paintings are hanging in these photos and I’m hoping to interview her for Creativity Over Coffee in the New Year.

So without further ado here’s how our home looked on Sunday!

The Front Hall

Front Hall at Christmas

The tour started in the front hall. Visitors were greeted by this beautiful painting by Dottie of Scituate Light.

Lovely Scituate Light Oil Painting

I selected this painting because this beautiful lighthouse means so much to our family. My parents retired to Lighthouse Road and we have so many great memories of times there. The kids now sail around the inner harbor and we like to take picnic lunches to the beach. My dad loved this lighthouse and we scattered his ashes in the sea nearby. Whenever I go to the lighthouse I can always feel him close by.

Fresh greenery on our staircase

The garland on the banister is faux but I added a bunch of real evergreen and greenery for the tour.

Living Room

To the right of our front hall is the living room. The fire was roaring.

A vintage desk and a painting of Well Rock in Scituate

This painting is of Well Rock in Minot. We took our boys to that beach when they were little. They loved climbing on that rock. This beautiful painting is by Nancy Coveney. I LOVE the colors.

Pretty Oil Painting of Well Rock

Also, in this room is a small boat painting by Dottie.

An oil painting of a boat and our winter mantel

I chose that one because the colors were beautiful and it looks so restful to me. We have teal colored books in the bookcase and it went so well with the water.

Below is a view of the living room from the dining room.

Sweet Poppy

The tiny oil above the couch is by Charles Stockbridge.

A pretty seascape and a slipcovered couch

The light in this painting is wonderful. The sail reminded me of boats we saw in Cornwall that were shrimping. I love the warm setting sun. The keys and emblem were my grandfathers and thought they complimented this pretty painting.

Lovely oil painting of the sea and vintage nautical items

Through the french door is the kids’ playroom. I hardly ever show this room on the blog because it’s always a mess. Ha! Ha!

The Playroom

The playroom at Christmas

All the artwork in here is by my kids. They decorated the tree, too.

A glimpse of the children's playroom at Christmas, a pretty tree and mason jar snow globes

We made the mason jar snow globes a few years ago.

This tree was actually up in our bedroom. I took it apart and they kids got to decorate with handmade ornaments and ornaments from my own childhood.

A whimsical children's Christmas tree

I think John and Conor did a great job on the tree, don’t you?

Dining Room

Sun-filled dining room

This is one of my favorite rooms. The living room and dining room join via these gorgeous wood columns. The kids playroom is through the french doors and goes the width of the home.

Luke built that table and we’ve had so many great times with friends and family in here.

Festive Christmas decorating

A gorgeous oil sailboat and pretty winter decor in the dining room

Hanging in here was a beautiful sailboat oil by Dottie.

My husband and kids sail and this painting reminded me of their love of sailing.

Sailboat Oil Painting

I love the name of the painting too.

Christmas by the Sea - Coastal Dining Room

Simple Coastal Touches for Christmas

I thought the blues of the candles, plates, and rug perfectly compliment the blues in Dottie’s painting.

Elegant but relaxed Christmas dining room

Our kitchen is next to the dining room and we baked mince pies and snowball cookies.

The Kitchen

Coastal Kitchen at Christmas

Our kitchen is decorated simply for Christmas with fresh holly, pine and greenery.

I made the Fresh Oysters sign for my hubby over the summer.

Fresh greenery and vintage crocks

A simple wreath hung with twine is elegant and understated.

Baking in the kitchen and getting ready for the holidays

fresh holly in a vintage crock

An antique crock with fresh greenery on a wood slice looks perfect for Christmas.

Fresh baked snowball cookies and pretty garland hanging in the window

Everyone loved the mince pies and snowball cookies.

The kitchen smelled heavenly with the scent of butter, raisins, and pecans.

The tour ended in our sunroom.

The Sunroom

I’ve already shared this room on the blog, but you didn’t get a chance to see this corner yet.

Nature inspired sunroom by the sea at Christmas

A simple pine garland and live glittering trees make it feel festive in here. They also smell like Christmas. The driftwood stick Conor found at the beach. He’s always bringing home treasures from the beach…

I hope you all enjoyed seeing a glimpse of our home decked out for the Scituate Art’s Association Home Tour.

I thoroughly enjoyed your tour as I sit by the light of candles and tree lights. This very afternoon I had looked up your post on mince pies and made them! We ate some, and they were as delicious as I remembered. I am taking the rest of this batch in the morning to the wonderful physical therapists who helped me so much the last three months after I had a knee replacement.

I have admired your dining room for awhile now. Am wondering if you are happy with the Ikea chairs and if they are wearing well…they look great in the photos. We seldom eat in the dining room now as we are just two, older, but would like to change out the chairs we have for this fresher brighter look. thanks

Thanks for your reply, we happen to be visiting our daughter this weekend and she lives very near Ikea so we will make the journey into that maze and look at the chairs!
