Our New Fixer-Upper
I’m excited about today’s post. I’m sharing our new fixer-upper.
This new house needs quite a bit of work. All new hardwoods, a roof, appliances but it has good bones…
This is actually a miniature house and I thought it would be a fun winter project to take on with the kids. A lovely person, Patty, listed it on Scituate Yard Sale for free. It’s The Jefferson Dollhouse kit and she and her children part finished it years ago. It’s been sitting like that ever since…
I currently have it on a card table on the landing. This is where I usually take photos of my painted pieces but I thought this would be the perfect spot to work on it with the boys. We get lots of light up here and there will be plenty of room to sit and paint and create up here.
The company still makes this house and you can see it here (affiliate link).
As you can see it needs a new roof. Well, a roof but think we may do the hardwood floors first. Hopefully there’s no rain or snow forecast (Ha! Ha!). Want to see inside?
John and Conor are very interested in design and decor and are so excited to come up with ideas for the rooms. Look at this blank slate! I’m thinking the room on the left is the kitchen and to the right is the living area, but we still have to determine the other rooms.
If you look carefully, you might see the current resident, a spider. John will take him outside before we begin construction. He’s such an animal lover and my spider whisperer 😉
The living room already has built-ins and a fireplace.
Patty generously gave us this box filled with items she had purchased for the house along with a great book on dollhouses:
Miniature bricks and mortar for the fireplace.
Spindles for the stairs.
A lighting kit (she wasn’t sure if it would still work):
Even an oriental rug!!! You guys know how much I like those 😉
We are so excited to get working on this sweet little house! We will, of course, share our progress on the building and each room as we do them. We intend on buying some things and DIYing others. This world of miniatures is all new to me and I know that Amazon and Etsy have some things but what are your favorite sources for miniatures and dollhouses?
If you love miniatures then you might like these posts by some of my friends who have / or are working on miniature homes:
My friend Courtney has a wonderful section in her new book French Country Cottage (affiliate link) all about her childhood dollhouse. It’s so very sweet.
I’m so grateful to Patty for this lovely gift. I have a feeling it’s gonna bring us many hours of joy and something to pass down to our children’s children.
Aww, so sweet. What a great project to take on with our boys.
HOW FUN!!!! I now want to get a doll house and decorate it!!! Can’t wait to follow your progress!! Thanks for sharing!
Ha ha, had us fooled for a moment! So exiting to have such a project, look forward to the updates.
It will be fun and i will enjoy the updates.
Whew! You had me stressed for a moment, Danielle! I thought you were moving. I love the dollhouse project and know you and your boys will enjoy fixing it up and making it amazing!
This is so darling. I have always loved the miniature houses. What fun you will have.
Danielle, Every time I see blogs sharing their dollhouses, I keep thinking of the one I have. I bought it a number of years ago. I’ve painted the exterior, put the shingles on and installed the electoral. Mine is a four-story townhouse. The roof opens to show the 4th floor, which will be the girl’s room and an attic. The front of the house has a door that swings open to show the interior of the house. All I need is to find some spare time to work on it.
So exciting, I can’t wait to see all the progress! I’m still in the works with MY dollhouse of course, I’ll have to post soon too!
I love your doll house and even more that your boys are interested! I can’t wait to follow your progress as it has awakened the little girl within!
Love, love, love!
