Owen Grain Sack Dresser (Before & After)
Happy Monday! I’m so excited for you to meet Owen!
He’s my latest and greatest! He’s really the life of the party; always up for an adventure whether it is globe trotting or being the hero. But he wasn’t always so handsome…
He was kind of your average Joe. I knew when I saw him he was crying out for some grain sack stripes.
So I sanded the top using my palm sander and stained with Minwax in dark walnut. If you’re interested to learn more on staining click here.
The newly stained top makes the wood look so rich now, a perfect look for Owen. Then I painted the body in Old White Chalk Paint® with Primer Red stripes.
I knew I wanted a distressed look. So I used a combination of my 3M sanding blocks in medium grit and a really great new product by 3M – the Clean Sand System.
We all know how messy sanding can get. You hook this sanding tool up to your vacuum and it takes all that chalk paint dust away. I found it easiest to use on the drawers when they were horizontal, the seal was better than when I was trying to sand on a vertical surface. There was much less clean up than usual! For the rest of the piece I used my sanding block. I love the results. You can see a close up of the distressing:
But I think my favorite part of this dresser is the hardware. I love the pumpkin knobs by D. Lawless Hardware. In the “before” Owen’s knobs were a little dated and now, well, now they are rustic and earthy and match his rugged side. This is the first time I’ve used D. Lawless Hardware and I have to tell you I love it. The weight is so nice and beautifully made. I can’t wait to use more on upcoming pieces.
I sealed the stained top with Miss Mustard Seed hemp oil and the rest of the piece with Annie Sloan’s clear wax, then buffed lightly.
I almost forgot to give you a peek inside the drawers –
Owen is also a beach boy at heart – great sailor and fisherman. I told you he was the life of the party. I used amber shellac inside the drawers which looked nice but just thought this lovely paper from Paperscapes in Cohasset added a fun touch.
I actually think I like Owen better than the Grain Sack Dresser I did for Conor’s room, but don’t tell Conor because he’ll want to keep both.

I’m a blue girl but I must admit that I love Owen’s red stripes. I think this dresser would be perfect for a little boy or in a beach house.
What do you think about Owen?
Disclosure: D. Lawless provided me with the pumpkin knobs and 3M provided me with the clean sand system to try. I love both products. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
super cute! those drawer liners are my favorite part!
Classic with a twist ~ love it, Danielle!
Both dressers are incredible! Thanks for the tip about 3 M clean sand system. Owen must be thrilled with the outside and in of his special dresser!
Awesome job! So glad the knobs worked out. The oil rubbed bronze goes very well over the white!
This is awesome. Love both dressers and the liners are adorable too. Great job.

It looks great, I love your grain sack look and the wood stain is gorgeous.
He was an average Joe…but not anymore! Well done! Love the knobs and the refinished top!

Thank you, Robin. x
This is outstanding, you amaze me with what you do to furniture. I like both of them but this one is something a little different.
