Painting Dollar Store Pumpkins

Ooooh, I can’t wait to show you this easy update for Dollar Store pumpkins!  You may remember, my mantel I shared on Monday.  I told you I spent only $2 to create it.  Here is where my $2 went.

Can you see the two pumpkins up there?  I saw them at the Dollar Store and just had to have them, but they were a tad orange.

Oh, okay.  They were very orange and kind of yellow and just, well, really not pleasant for my color palette.  I really loved there shape and grooves though.

For all of you who are new to Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, this is a great first project.  You can just use a sample pot for the pumpkin.  Real pumpkins paint up nice too.  I did that last year.  Click here for more on that one!

What you need for this project:

1. Pumpkins (faux or real)
2. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
3. Paint Stick
4. Craft Paint Brush
5. Annie Sloan Wax (optional)

I decided on Old White and Versailles as they pick up the colors in my mantel.  I wanted soft and neutral.

Simply paint the pumpkins with Chalk Paint.  I did two coats.

And here’s the Versailles pumpkin:

The paint is still wet here.  I did two coats of paint and let them dry.  It took about 15 minutes to dry.  I left the stems dark.  You can add clear wax and dark wax if you want an aged effect, but I didn’t want that look.  I wanted it to look more clean and crisp.  If you are painting real pumpkins and want to put them outside don’t wax them.

The candlesticks on my mantel are also painted in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

For these, I did a wash of French Linen (the one on the left) and Duck Egg Blue (on the right) and then wiped away some paint with a Viva paper towel.  The candlesticks were originally a dark black wood.
Hope you enjoyed these tips.  If you’re interested in more pumpkin ideas, I’ll be discussing these over at All Things Girl.

Thank you, Kathy! I agree, I think they look nice both ways but wanted a more neutral color for my mantel. I got them at the dollar tree maybe a month ago. They are ceramic. I know all dollar trees and dollar stores are different. Maybe your’s will get them in soon. x
