Pool Progress – Fencing and Ground Work
The pool is really coming along and so much has happened in the last two weeks. I thought it was time to give you some pool progress – fencing and ground work that is needed to get the pool finished.
If you’ve been following along with our pool journey, then you know what a great job South Shore Gunite Pools is doing at our home.
In order for the pool to be finished a bunch of smaller things have to happen, like grading, electrical and making our fence up to code. In Massachusetts, a fence needs to surround either the pool or yard to make it in code. Next week, I’ll share the pebble finish pool interior with you guys.
Grading the Yard
Zach Costello came on Mother’s Day weekend and did an amazing job grading our yard. You might remember the huge dirt mounds that John and Conor LOVED digging in.
You may remember that Zach came and broke up the giant boulder we uncovered while digging for the pool.
Moving the Shed
Another piece of the puzzle that had to fit together was moving the She Shed. Part of the plan was moving the shed and bringing it forward to the pool patio. We enlarged the patio to make the shed a feature and also have another seating area by the deep end.
The shed used to be back further in the yard. As you can see here:
We had the shed moved forward, and lifted to meet the new patio.
Electrical and Equipment
A pool can’t work without electrical or equipment. A day was set aside for equipment set and once the shed was in place the electrical could be wired up.
The pumps and equipment are tucked along the fence and we’ll end up doing some sort of planting to hide all the equipment.
This is Leo, he’s the electrician, that works with the pool company:
Leo is from Ireland and we’ve enjoyed chatting with him.
This is Leo’s dog, Bowser:
Isn’t he cute?
Our dogs and kids loved meeting him.
In the above photo, you can see the lights above where they go.
Lots and lots of wires.
Fencing
While the electrical and equipment was being installed, we also had two great crews from Armstrong Fence installing two separate fences.
We kept the arborway, but the trellis fence and gate in the front had to be replaced because it was “climbable”. The back fence and gate had to be replaced because it also didn’t meet code.
The back fence is cedar with pressure treated posts.
The gate is extra large in case we need to get any equipment in the backyard.
It’s so nice to have a solid, secure fence back here. Some areas were old and some were damaged by nor’easters. I’m so glad that I know Max or Poppy can’t escape from the yard. You’ll also see the beginnings of our gardens back here. John, Conor and I planted them the other weekend right before it poured 😉
I’ll actually be sharing a tasty rhubarb recipe tomorrow.
In the front yard, we decided to go with a fence that would match the white vinyl in the side of the yard.
I thought the vinyl fence would come in in panels, but everything was assembled on site.
This fence will give more privacy but we liked how it had the trellis on top.
The dogs are a little sad because they can no longer see through the fence, but we absolutely love how the fencing came out.
Next week, I’ll share the pebble finish interior. We’re so close to our pool being ready for summer. A few more bits and pieces here and there.

Looking great – so excited for you. I know how I felt when our one in Australia was nearing completion. I had colorbond steel fencing around the garden/pond (the norm there). I’ve even had it installed here in the UK as it is maintenance free! No pool here though – far too cold – ha ha! I had a pebble beach slope/steps in my pool too.
