I created these Saltwash Starfish with some saltwash powder mixed with white paint and then used bright colors on top. I found the starfish at Christmas Tree Shops. A pack of 6 was only $5!!!! I thought this little craft would be perfect for a coastal shower or wedding, even for everyday coastal decor in your home.
It was a fun craft project and would also be great to do with your kids during their summer break.
How to Make Saltwash Starfish
Materials
- Ceramic Starfish ( I got mine at Christmas Tree Shop)
- Saltwash Powder
- Paint (I used what I had in my basement)
- Paint Brushes
- Sandpaper
- Wax Paper to protect your surface
Method
Step 1 – Mix together Saltwash Powder with white paint. I used Annie Sloan Pure White. You could mix it with colored paint to give a more boho look to your starfish.
When mixed it should have frosting-like consistency.
Step 2 – Apply the Saltwash mixture in a globbing motion, making sure to knock down any really high peaks. Allow to dry.
Step 3 – Apply bright colored paint to your starfish. I used the following as that’s what I had on hand:
Louis Blue Chalk Paint | Greek Blue Chalk Paint | Florence Chalk Paint
Seaside Fusion Mineral Paint | Heirloom Fusion Mineral Paint
Step 4 – Once dry sand the starfish to expose the white paint.
Step 5 – Clean off your starfish and enjoy!
Sometimes I think it’s easier to watch a video. You can see the short video below:
You can see how much detail the paint and Saltwash add. From left is the starfish before, middle is painted, and right is with Saltwash.
These were so much fun to make!I think the brighter and darker colors look the best. I think my favorite is the Greek Blue.
They look so pretty mixed with pottery shards, sea glas,s and shells we found on the beach. I think these be gorgeous on a summer tablescape.

Danielle, I love this idea of using textured paint on starfish with these fabulous color combinations. Happy Summer! Pinning!
Thank you so much for your kind comments. They’re really so much fun to paint. Very relaxing.
I love these starfish and the texture and colors, thanks.
Thank you, Marlene. Love the playfulness of them.
Hi Danielle, I love the starfish! Also I noticed you had a very nice acknowlegement in the author’s notes of The Southern Side of Paradise by Kristy Woodson Harvey. Loved the book, and have read just about everything else she’s written.
Isn’t Kristy lovely! So kind of her to mention me in the author’s note. Actually, have a Q&A up today with her, along with a giveaway of her Peachtree Bluff series.
I’ve had some salt wash powder unopened in my workshop for over two years. I love this idea!
Glad I could spark some inspiration xx Have fun painting!
What a fabulous project Danielle and those colours are so perfectly coastal.
Thank you for sharing this project at Create, Bake, Grow & Gather this week. I’m delighted to be featuring your saltwash starfish at tonight’s party and pinning too.
