Scituate Snow Days (Blizzard 2015)

“White lips, pale face, breathing in Snowflakes”

Thank you all for your warm wishes and lovely emails. Yes, a blizzard arrived in Scituate on Monday night and snowed, and snowed and snowed.

Actually, as I type this snow is still falling outside…

On Monday night, I cooked so many meals – paleo chili, butternut squash soup, taco meat for “Taco Tuesday” and Paleo Pad Thai.  I really thought I’d wake up with no electricity.

Thankfully, we didn’t lose power at all and we are safe.  Here’s what our street looked like around 1pm:

Our Street

The visibility was very poor. You can hardly see the rest of our street.  I’m standing in snow that comes to my knees for this photo.

Here’s our yard:

Blizzard in our yard

It was 15 degrees F and the wind was whipping the snow around.  Poppy, who usually, loves the snow wasn’t interested in being out in it.  She couldn’t manuever in it because it was just too deep.  Instead of braving the elements, she spent most of the day flopped on our guest room bed.  This room has actually become Poppy’s room, by the way!

The boys were so excited to go out in it!

They’ve never seen it is so deep.  We got 24 inches.

Playing in the blizzard

After being stuck inside for most the day, I just had to go for a walk. This sounds easier than it was.  I wanted to see how the harbor looked (worried about flooding) of friends’ shops.

We were lucky that we didn’t get any damage in the storm, but many people did. Monday night they shut off power on some streets right on the water for fear of fire.  A sea wall broke on Tuesday afternoon and there was much flooding of roads close to that.  I heard reports of a car being swept away by the sea over by First Cliff.

I walked down the hill to the harbor and it was a ghost town. No one was about because of the travelling ban.

That snow doesn’t look very deep but it was.

The drifts of snow were very high at Riva’s.

The sea was angry and the sky was dark.

Fishing Boats Blizzard 2015

I took these photos with my phone because I was so worried about ruining my camera.

Brrr!  It was freezing and I would have loved a hot cup of coffee from the Lucky Finn, but of course no coffee today:

This is not the first blizzard Scituate has seen and it won’t be the last.  I think I’ve said this about our little fishing town before, but the great thing about the “Irish Riviera” are the people that live here.  When people are in danger, when people need help – friends and neighbors and strangers are there with open arms.  We are so lucky and blessed to live in such a wonderful community.

I went back up the hill my eye lashes heavy with flakes.  I opened the door and John said, “Oh, Mommy, mommy, your face is white.”  My face was frozen.  I was so glad we had a warm, toasty house.

Today, we will be out playing in the snow as they have another snow day!

Hi Danielle, I’m sure it’s freezing and a real inconvenience, but it just looks sooooo beautiful! I wish we had snow – any time! I live next to a beach in Australia and just love the beauty of where you are. So glad you are all safe as it sounds like a worrying experience. Never having been in a blizzard it’s easy just to see the good about it. Thanks for sharing the images. My 19 year old daughter is in NYC and trying to get back home to us, so the blizzard has been on our minds. Hope all… Read more »

Hi Danielle,

Glad you are all ok in Scituate. Hope your parents are too. It looks similar to how it looked back during the Blizzard of 78. I love how your blog brings me back to one of my favorite places on earth. That harbor is magic to me.

We’re in Leicester, just west of Worcester, and had a record 33 inches here. Watched the reports of Scituate on the news and were glad it wasn’t worse. Still digging out here!

I am so glad you and your family are safe. I was so worried after seeing the devastation to the homes on the coast. Between you and “Content In a Cottage”, I get to see so much beauty……Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful pictures. We got less snow than you but I am still digging us out. I bought out the whole grocery store thinking it was going to be really bad.

I came to your site today just to see how you made out in the storm. After hearing how badly Scituate was hit, I thought about you. I love your site and it’s been such an inspiration to me. Glad to hear all is well with you and your family.
