Simple Bittersweet and Pumpkin Tablescape
A simple bittersweet and pumpkin tablescape perfect for fall and Thanksgiving! Create this foraged look in a few minutes.
For a few years I’ve dreamt of doing something with bittersweet. The other day I spotted some on Museum Beach here in Scituate. So I clipped a few branches.
Please note – Oriental Bittersweet is an invasive species. It is also poisonous to dogs. So I was very careful using this on the back deck. I made sure none dropped so Max and Poppy won’t get sick. I made sure to dispose of it properly.
Here’s what I came up with:

A cozy table out on the back deck. We’re having some warmer days which I’m loving. It would be amazing if we could have Thanksgiving out here, but I have a feeling November will bring the frost and colder temperatures.
To create this look I started with a woven jute runner. This is the one I have here.
Then I filled a factory crate (I got from my friend Nancy at the Sea Rose Cottage a few years ago) with moss, faux candles, old corks and a few leaves.
I scattered the bittersweet on top and brought some orange pumpkins we had in the front of our house back here to complete the look.
I added some striped outdoor pillows (that live in our sunroom and were originally from Pier One) to the end chairs.
I placed faux fur rugs over the back of the other chairs to make it feel more cozy.
The string lights are from Target, as are the chairs. Luke built the cedar table and bench (which you can’t see in the photos). You can get the tutorials for those here and here. The compass rose I painted to look liked aged copper – get the DIY here.
I hope this gave you some ideas for creating a foraged tablescape. Luke and I are actually thinking of replacing this deck next summer and make a patio out here. Would love to hear if you have a patio and if you have any recommendations for us. Sources or similar sources can be found below.

Love the look! Bittersweet is beautiful, but the bane of my existence! It tries to grow all over my garden and I fight to keep it out. Thanks for sharing the fact that it’s poisonous to dogs. I didn’t know that. Take care!

I had planned on making a wreath but thought it would be too messy and go everywhere. I’m thinking about buying a faux one for next year. I know. I fight with it trying to strangle our mock orange. xx
I wasn’t aware bittersweet is poisonous for animals, and invasive. Thanks for the info, your setting is quite peacefull and still vibrant with the season, thanks, Sandi
Hi Sandi, there’s a type that isn’t invasive but the kinds you see growing on the side of the road or beach are. Danielle x
Your patio looks great. I love the use of jute. Theo thumbs up!
Thank you! That jute runner is so old and is from Target but it’s so versatile.
Love this pretty Fall tablescape. I had no idea that bittersweet was a problem for pets. Thanks for sharing that!
Thanks, Libbie. Yes, I’ve been very hesitant to use it for that reason, but I was really careful with it. xx
Love the elegant simplicity of your table, Danielle. We’re still enjoying outdoor dining as well and hope for mild weather at Thanksgiving. We’ll see. xo
Thanks, Juliet. When I took these photos the weather was lovely but now it’s snowing here! I’m not ready for winter…
