Simple Outdoor Fall Decor
I’m feeling very behind in my seasonal decor this year. Do you feel the same way? We did decorate the front yard over the weekend and I’m excited to share our simple outdoor fall decor.
Here’s how are home is looking after this weekend:
I always find it very hard to wave good bye to summer. Summer is when our seaside town sparkles and I always feel like fall is a time where nature doesn’t feel as luscious. Although I do love seeing the vibrant color leaves.
Over the weekend, Luke and I took the dogs for walk in the woods which provided some wonderful inspiration and we also stopped at a local greenery to pick up our supplies for decorating the front yard.
I like to keep things simple. So if you’re looking for a few simple ideas read on.
Inspired by Nature
There is so much inspiration around us. I enjoy walking with my family and dogs to soak in that inspiration. We had a lovely walk over at Norris Reservation on Saturday. It’s a lovely spot with numerous walking trails, a boat house (we love to picnic there), and pretty boardwalks. The dogs love it as much as we do!
Here’s a peek:
This is from inside the boathouse:
We enjoyed watching these double crested cormorants while we had our picnic.
A Trip to the Local Garden Center
This year we decided to shop at R&C Farms in Scituate on 123. This 4th generation local farm has been growing in Scituate for 60 years. The owners are lovely and so knowledgeable. We bought Conor a cherry tree there a few years ago and I can’t believe how tall it is now. Over the weekend, we were delighted to see the assortment of their own pumpkins, gourds and squashes:
Why It’s Important to Buy Local Pumpkins and Decor
- First of all, it helps a local business
- The pumpkins are more likely fresh and will last longer
- It’s better for the environment because the pumpkins and decor hasn’t come a distance.
- You’re able to find more varieties and heirloom versions.
Simple Outdoor Fall Decor Ideas
I love simple decor that looks very natural. I also love affordable ideas. If you feel the same, I hope you enjoy these ideas.
Use Green Cornstalks
This color green makes me so happy! I love finding cornstalks when they’re freshly cut because that green feels like its full of so much energy. To style your cornstalks simply tie them onto columns with twine. As the cornstalks dry you’ll need to tighten your twine.
The cornstalks make a lovely focal point for our front door. I’ve used green cornstalks in the past and simply love this look!
The green will fade and dry out as time progresses and will have more of a straw color in time.
Pile on The Pumpkins and Gourds
I’m drawn to heirloom pumpkins. I love the muted colors and textures. Many people ask about our milk box. Yes, we get weekly milk delivery from Hornstra Farms located in Norwell. We love getting local fresh milk and also have delicious ice creams and other assorted grocery products delivered. It makes life so much easier and we love the delicious local products they carry.
Summer Plants and Pumpkins
I thought our window boxes and urns looked pretty good despite the drought so I just added pumpkins on top rather than buying all new plants.
I love how our vintage urns look with pumpkins and potato vines. I was able to find some really unusual squashes too. Look at this green acorn squash that looks almost black.
I interspersed pumpkins into our window boxes too.
Just enough to give a taste of fall.
Forgo the Wreath
I felt like there was enough going on in the front that I didn’t need to add a wreath. Now you can see our pretty vintage brass whale knocker against the blue door.
If you look closely in the above photo you can see our sunroom / my studio. That’s where I paint all the watercolors right at that little table. You’ll notice we have an empty patch there where we need to plant something. We moved the gas meter to the front of the house so I plan on planting something in the spring. Let me know if you have any recommendations for plants!
Paint the Shutters Blue
I often get asked about our front door and shutters. The color is Buxton Blue by Benjamin Moore. We painted them in high gloss (probably 9 years ago) and I still love the color. Many people want to know the color and it looks great with cedar shingles but also painted clapboard. You can see all the colors of our home here.
Plant Daisies
We planted these daisies several years ago. I love that they come back each season. Don’t they look pretty?
Have Cute Helpers
Decorating for the season helps if you have cute helpers! Ha! Ha! I couldn’t resist sharing some photos of Luke and Max who enjoyed helping.
We do have to be right there when Max is out just in case another dog passes by. Poppy was too interested in her bush and the backyard to be part of this photoshoot.
Isn’t Max a cutie though?
I hope this gave you some simple and affordable fall decor ideas!
