Small Updates that Make a Big Impact in the Kitchen
Is a whole renovation not in the budget right now? Today I’m sharing small updates that make a big impact in the kitchen.
A kitchen renovation isn’t in our budget especially after putting in a pool last summer….
Our kitchen isn’t perfect but it isn’t a total gut job either. Since moving in we’ve made small changes here and there. Things like – stick on subway tile, painting the cabinets, and painting the walls gray. You can actually see a bunch of ideas for refreshing your kitchen without renovating here.
I dream of marble or quartz counters and a big island but for now I’m going to share a small update that can make a big change.
Swapping out the hardware instantly gives a fresh look. I always say hardware is like a pair of fun earrings to an outfit or like a blow out if you have naturally curly hair, like me. It’s the finishing touch. We added some beautiful new hardware and our kitchen is beaming ear to ear. My friend Derrick over at D. Lawless sent me some lovely hardware for our kitchen. I’m in LOVE with these knobs, pulls, and hinges.
Are you guys familiar with D. Lawless? I’ve talked about them a lot on the blog, especially, when I’m talking about furniture makeovers. I’ve also recommended them to design clients. D. Lawless has such lovely hardware but is a fraction of the cost of other stores. We’re talking WAAAAAAYYYYY cheaper.
I never loved the hardware in our kitchen. The pulls always reminded me of the logo for Caneel Bay. Every time I looked at them that’s what I saw. The hinges were getting very rusty and I just thought I was stuck with that aged look because I didn’t realize I could buy the same hinges in a different color.
Here’s a look at my rusty hinges (I can’t believe I’m showing you a photo of this). Sigh.
Here’s the hardware before:
Now, here’s the after:
For quite awhile I’ve wanted to incorporate brass hardware into our kitchen, for added warmth. D. Lawless has champagne bronze hardware, which is a soft, muted brass and it looks lovely when it catches the sunlight.
I opted for the 3/8″ inset hinges in the champagne bronze and coordinated the Fulton Knob and the Fransisco Pull. I love knobs for upper cabinets but love pulls for drawers and lowers. The Fransisco pull is lovely, it has a beautiful minimal quality but also makes me think of bamboo.
Don’t the Fransisco pulls have a lovely coastal look?
You won’t believe the prices either!!! The knobs are just under $2 a piece and the pulls are $2.19. If you’ve shopped for hardware then you know some places charge $14 for one pull. We have lots of drawers and cabinets so it’s nice to know that D. Lawless stocks affordable options.
I love the fresh look the champagne bronze hardware gives to our kitchen. I also love that it coordinates nicely with the pendant light from Ikea. What do you think of the new and improved look?
If you want to update your kitchen or other spaces, I highly recommend checking out D. Lawless Hardware. A huge thank you to Derrick and the D. Lawless family for helping me update our kitchen.

Love the change in hardware. We are doing just $200 updates to each room this year. I am in the middle of the girl’s bathroom right now.
Blessings, Dawn
What a fun idea. Sometimes having a budget is a blessing and makes you think outside the box. xx
Danielle, I was just looking at that same style pull for my kitchen to update old cabinets. DLawless has much better price than what I was finding. Thanks for the suggestion, I already put them in my cart! I’ve been thinking about painting my cabinets, was it difficult? And what did you use for paint and primer? I have dark wood that I want to paint pale gray, so primer is definitely the first step. I love your kitchen with the built ins.
Yay! Lisa, I’m so glad I could help you find some pulls you love. We love these! I actually hired a painter to paint mine. Andy used to Benjamin Moore Advance and primed ahead of time. He sprayed the cabinet fronts. I have to say their still looking great 2 years later!
Danielle, I LOVE your kitchen! The new hardware looks great. Your photos are amazing, too. I need new hinges and am gonna check out DLawless. Thanks for the info on the company!
I was surprised and delighted to find out they made these types of hinges. I just figured I was stuck with rusty hinges. I used to cringe every time I saw them. Hooray for Champagne Bronze much better than rust. xx
The new kitchen hardware is very nice, but I have to say the hinges sealed the deal for me! I can see why you are so happy!
So glad you like them. Aren’t the hinges lovely?!?
The new hardware adds such a nice touch of warmth to your white kitchen. Your cabinets seem to go perfectly with your home. When you are ready for new counters, Zodiaq London Sky Quartz would look beautiful. We replaced Terra-cotta Tile counters 🙄 (I know awful), in our new to us, 32 year old Saltbox Reproduction home 2 years ago with London Sky. It is beautiful and so easy to care for.
Hi Dianne, I’m so glad you like the new hardware. Thank you for the quartz recommendation. I will pin that so I can remember when we get closer to doing our kitchen over. Your kitchen sounds lovely. I’m sure the Terra Cotta must have been very chic at some point in the past (ha! ha!).
I love your kitchen all those cute built-ins are what makes older houses so wonderful but, i do understand about the countertops i would love to have quartz. The new knobs and handles are nice.
I do love the character of our home just would love some more function forward things in the kitchen but the new hardware is making me happy…for now. 🙂
I. too, love your kitchen. I live in a very old house as well. We did a partial reno, the floors, and the lower half of the cupboards. I painted the uppers. I will never completely change my kitchen as it reflects this wonderful old farmhouse.
I agree, there’s a fine line to balance the charm of older homes. Your kitchen reno sounds lovely.
So beautiful!!! It’s amazing the difference you made! I’m a big fan of D.Lawless, too!
Your kitchen really is beautiful!
I really love their hardware and it has made such a huge difference.
