Something Fishy in the Kitchen

Living by the sea, I’m always drawn to coastal and nautical references. I found something new while out antiquing. I think you’d agree there’s something fishy in the kitchen.

A new carved fish in the kitchen

I couldn’t resist this beautiful hand carved and hand painted fish I found the other week with my mom. We were out antiquing and I was hoping to find a small armoire and some brass finds for Luke’s office. Well, I found something else entirely. This fish! The minute I saw it I knew it was coming home with me…

This is a Red Drum, known for the black mark by its tail. The Red Drum is not usually found in the waters of New England but usually found in the Gulf Coast. You can read more about the fish here. I found this beauty at Elite Repeat in Hanover. It’s a wonderful shop with great prices and great treasures. I always seem to find something or more than one thing here.

Detail of the carved fish

As you guys know, we don’t have a large house and sometimes it’s hard to find wall space. This fish is pretty large. I walked around the house with fish in hand trying to figure out where to place it.  I thought I’d put it in Luke’s office as I thought it would pop with his rich, dark walls. BUT I’ve been working on something else for up there, a treasure from England, and I also felt like if the fish was in his office I wouldn’t see it.

We debated the entry or the living room…

We settled on the kitchen. The owl gray walls perfectly compliment they grays in the fish.

It also looks really great with the Fresh Oysters Sign I created with Saltwash.

Coastal Kitchen Details

That ironstone bowl was another treasure I found that day, only $6.80. That was from the Sea Chest Consignment where I also found the turtle neck and cloak for John’s Halloween costume. Sometimes when you’re on the hunt you find many treasures and sometimes you find nothing. I got lucky that day. I found a few other things which I’ll share in another post.

Since taking the photos I’ve filled the bowl with tons of shells 😉

There's something fishy in the kitchen!

I just knew there was something about that beautiful fish. It needed to come to our home in Scituate. I love looking at it every day.

The boys love it, too 😉

My sons love the new fish too!

Hope you love it as much as I do!

I love your kitchen, and that fish is really pretty, it looks good with your bar stools. Vintage bowls are always a good buy. I would love to see a picture of your boys dressed up for Halloween, miss those days since my sons and grandsons have gotten too big.

Something a bit unexpected is always great…and I know how it is to decorate with all men in the house…you have to let ruffles go—and include them somehow! Great shots!
