Spring Party Favors

“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine to the soul.” – Luther Burbank

Spring Party Favors - How to make realistic looking aged pots - www.findingsilverpennies.comI don’t know about you, but flowers always make me happy. I usually buy them for myself because my hubby is too practical, which is okay. He’d rather buy me a gadget or something for the kitchen.

Anyhow, I thought some spring party favors which involve beautiful white flowering plants and aged terra cotta pots would be fun to make.

Giving the gift of flowers to brighten your guests’ day is a perfect way to celebrate any occaission!  You could even make them for yourself just because!

They look sweet all together on a console, or a bureau, as a pretty statement if you don’t plan on hosting an event this spring. I think you’ll be surprised just how easy and affordable these sweet little pots are!

Method

If you look at old terra cotta pots they get a kind of white chalky coating on them. This technique uses paint to mimic the look.

Step 1 – Remove packaging from your terra cotta pots.  Put paint in a painter’s tray and water down slightly. I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Soapstone and in Lamp White.

Step 2 – Dip decorative sponge into both colors and dab lightly on the terra cotta.  Spritz with water and wipe with paper towel. This gives a stronger look.

or

For more muted look, you could spritz the terra cotta with water and then sponge with paint and wipe with a towel.  I thought this gave the most realistic look.

or

lightly paint with a brush and wipe paint away with wet towel.

I tried all of the above techniques on these pots. Some I used more Soapstone (dark gray) others none at all.  I wanted the pots to look like they were always like that so didn’t want them to be too uniform.

Step 3 – Allow pots to dry and then place your mini flowering plants inside.

Easy, peasy lemon squeezy! Now your pretty favors are ready for your table.

I first placed these beautiful place mats my mom gave me on our table.

Setting Table for Spring PartyThey’re reusable placemats with a blue and white motif that I love so much. Don’t they look like old china?  I layered these with our white dishes from Birch Lane. The plants looks so sweet on top.
