Styling a Table with Supermarket Flowers

I got up early this morning to work on our Thanksgiving Tablescape and I thought it would be fun to share it with you. Today I’m stying a table with supermarket flowers.

Before I go into the ideas and steps behind this little tablescape. I wanted to share a bit of my heart. There is so much happening in the world right now that isn’t okay, there’s so much pain and suffering. People hurting and killing one another. I try not to be political on this blog as I like to focus on the positive but wanted to say the world events are painful and heartbreaking to watch. I also see the rising inflation rates and cost of everything. I relax by styling and creating beauty inside our home. Everyone is impacted by this. So, I thought it would be fun to style with only elements that we had and a few supermarket flowers.

Styling a Table with Supermarket Flowers

The inspiration for our table was the sunset oil painting by John Fragassi that we bought at Afterglow Fine Arts during the summer. My friends at The Frame Center framed in it in gold for me. This painting has so much warmth and light and the sun just seems to glow.

The warm tones inspired the centerpiece.

For the centerpiece I used pincushion protea and simple greenery in a crock that I found at Savers a few years ago for a couple of dollars.

Special Tip – Place a smaller vessel inside the crock. So you don’t have to fill the crock. You’ll use less flowers. Also make sure to remove any leaves or greenery from the water so your flowers will last longer.

Mixed in with the protea and greenery are preserved mushrooms which I got from Petal and Root. If you’re not local these preserved mushroom picks are similar.

How to Layer Texture

I find adding layers of texture makes for a more interesting and inviting table. So I start by creating the centerpiece, but then I put that aside to focus on the rest of the table.

  • I like to roll out a runner. This is a jute runner that I got years ago at Target but they still sell this runner.
  • Then I place greenery from the supermarket. There’s a mix of eucalyptus, evergreen, ferns, and other greenery. I try to put the heavier evergreen branches at the bottom.
  • To “hide” the stem adds I added an acacia slice.
  • Candle light brings ambiance to every table. I scattered some tea light holders from Ikea and some woven ones my friend Nancy at Westend Weavers made.
  • The faux copper chargers which I painted years and years ago.

The tarnished silver creates more texture and patina. My mom actually found this beautiful set at a yard sale before I was born. I love using it for special occasions.

Make it Special

The table has lots of beautiful greenery and flowers so I decided to keep each place setting very simple with white plates from Ikea (our every day dishes), tan cotton raw edge napkins and foraged some flowers from the yard.

On each napkin I placed a thistle (from the supermarket) and included a seagrass frond, rosemary sprig and some sweet autumn clematis seed pods.

It’s so simple and soft but adds so much to the table, I think.

It was fun running around the yard in my pjs with clippers cutting things from our yard.

More Ideas

I hope my simple and affordable tablescape gives you some ideas for Thanksgiving and the upcoming holidays. It’s really amazing how every day items you already have can be so beautiful. Bringing in some flowers from the supermarket or your yard can just elevate them.

I find going slowly helps me style the table and also stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.

Using warm textures in a tablescape

I store tea lights, cloth napkins, crystal glasses in our dining room so I have them at the ready whenever I need them.

Hi Danielle, I can barely watch the news anymore. Your house & table look great! I especially love that painting!! I’m on the hunt for thistle myself. Where did you find if? And the mushrooms are very cool; gives a very earthy feel.

Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
