Trading Spaces: Driscoll Edition
As if we didn’t already have enough going on this summer we decided to move everything around in our home. I’m excited to share Trading Spaces: Driscoll Edition.
I’m a big believer in making one’s home functional for the family. After being here 7 years I was happy with how all our rooms turned out BUT our boys are not so little anymore (sigh). John is 14 and will be going into high school, Conor will turn 11 in September and will be entering middle school. Since moving to our home they’ve shared a bedroom. About 4 years ago we completely redid their bedroom and gave them a work area. We also had ceilings repaired and took down a faux wall.
This is how it looked AFTER:

As you can see lots of togetherness. Side by side desks and side by side beds.
Since the update, we switched out the rug last year with a beautiful blue ogee shag rug and new lights for above their desks. I thought the set up was working great until this spring. During the shut down and distance learning they found it so very hard to work in the same space. John would be on a zoom call and yell at Conor to get out of his space. So Conor set up in the dining room.
I’ve been working with the boys measuring their space and furniture and trying to figure out how to configure their room to help them as we’re not sure what the school year will look like in the fall. We measured and created a floor plan and measured all their furniture.
We thought about getting them new desks and some kind of partitions….
Then I had a BRILLIANT idea when they were at sailing lessons….
What if we moved around all the upstairs rooms? The only caveat is we wouldn’t change the wall color in Luke’s old office and we wouldn’t be changing the Serena & Lily paper (affiliate link) we had professionally hung in December. I know I’ve been so bad at sharing progress in our house recently. I had planned on revealing this updated office space soon….
We asked the kids would they want their own rooms?
The answer was a resounding YES!!! I honestly haven’t seen them so excited. You’d think we’d offer to take them to Disney World or that it was Christmas morning.

Saturday we moved all the furniture around the house.
The Big Move
Kids’ Room —–> Our Bedroom
Luke’s Office ——> Conor’s NEW Bedroom
Guest Room / My Office —–> John’s NEW Bedroom
Our Old Bedroom —–> Shared office for Luke and Me / Guest Room
Here’s a recap:
Old Master to Become Office / Guest Room
This is our old bedroom. We redid the space a three years ago. I love this room so much and we put a lot of work into it.

Since we both love this room so much, I thought it would be a great shared office. We could still enjoy this space while working. We have moved the daybed in here as well for when my mom stays over or when guests visit.
A glimpse of moving furniture into here:
Boys Bedroom to become New Master Bedroom
This room is the biggest bedroom in our home and was the original master. We’re still working out floor layout and I’m dreaming up a new design plan. I’d really love this spaciuos room to feel airy and coastal. I’m planning on keeping the room color the same but adding some light fixtures and perhaps a headboard for our bed.
Guest Room / My Office to become John’s Bedroom
This multi purpose room will become John’s bedroom. You can see how it looked as my office shared guest room here:
Luke’s Old Office to Become Conor’s Bedroom
You may remember I updated Luke’s office in a very clubby / English style with dark blue walls that feel like velvet.

The tin Guinness posters will need to move as I don’t think they’re appropriate for a 10 year old, but Conor loves the vintage desk so that will become his new desk. I’ve placed the hide rug in our new master and am selling the leather chair – sadly we have no place for it.
Conor is already enjoying his new bedroom:
We are exhausted from the big move over the weekend. We have no AC so it was hot and humid and lots of dust and sweat, but we were all able to sleep in our “new” rooms Saturday night. We will be slow decorating and figuring things out and I’ll, of course, share the progress here and on Insta Stories.
Can’t wait to hear what you think about Trading Spaces: Driscoll Edition! We’re actually all really excited to experience a new way of living and enjoying our home. I’m also very excited to think up some new design ideas 😉 Can’t wait to share the next phase in our home with you all!
A great idea!
Nothing like having your own space growing up. The boys are so lucky you could do this.
They are so excited, Lynn! It made my heart happy to see them both enjoying their new bedrooms. Conor listening to Hamilton while John blasted Abba. 😉
Wow! That’s a ton of moving all at once, but so FUN! We move the furniture around within our rooms all the time, but have never considered trading rooms. Can’t wait to see the finished rooms!!!
So much moving! It was like a jigsaw puzzle, too. We couldn’t move some things until others were moved. We’re all really excited about the new room layouts and looking forward to sharing as we make progress.
Wow,,I would love for you to come to my special wee home to give me ideas on how to re-arrange furniture. I love all what you have done in your home.
Awesome job 😉
Thank you, Brenda! Would love to help give you some ideas. x
Brilliant! We have also played the musical room game several times with four kids (and an occasional foster child) so everyone could claim a corner for themselves. Now we are down to one child and several guest rooms. It’s time for another refresh here! Your house will look beautiful and your boys will thrive.
I love what you have done so far, Danielle! Can’t wait to see the final results in each room! I like your style so much! I look forward to making my way to Scituate someday from the west coast!
Looking forward to seeing all the changes once complete! At 12 and 14, my girls decided they wanted their own rooms, so I built a basement room for the oldest. Three kids + me in a 3 bedroom house! Although they’ve always had, and still do have, a close relationship, they loved having their own “space” during their teenage years.
I don’t envy you all that furniture moving on what was a very hot and humid day here in Massachusetts! At least there was the pool to cool off in at the end of the day. As a teenager I used to move the furniture around in my room on a regular basis, and it was always a great way to really clean everything. There are always those pesky dust puppies in the corners you only reach when the furniture is moved. Like your home, ours is small and there are only so many furniture configurations that work in some… Read more »
It’s good that you have the space to change things as the family grows. It will be fun seeing all you do in the different rooms.
I think what you decided to do is brilliant!!!! Can’t wait to see the final result!!
