Updates to Our Boys’ Nautical Bedroom
It’s nearly been 2 years, since we redid our kids’ bedroom. I wanted to share updates to our boys’ nautical bedroom with you today.
Two years ago, we replaced the ceiling in our boys’ bedroom and also took a faux wall down in here. If you want to read more about our previously cracked ceilings you can here. This room was originally the master bedroom of our home when it was built, so it is the largest bedroom in our entire house. 😉
It’s large enough that they have an area to sleep and to work on projects or play on the computer.
I realize most children have their own rooms, but our boys love sharing a room. John is 12 and Conor is 8 and they really love being together.
We redid their bedroom nearly two years ago. You can see the reveal here and the workspace here.
There have been a few smaller updates to the room and I also wanted to share what works for us.

My mom found the cutest nautical bedding for their beds. She found sheets with tiny anchors and shams with fun wheels and anchors. Aren’t they sweet. The cotton is so soft, too. I love how crisp these feel for summer.
Conor has a few of his animals tucked in. I also love that their bedding is appropriate for their age and can grow with them. I don’t believe in creating themed rooms for kids.
The pendant light is from Ikea and was one that the boys felt needed to be in the room. I’m so glad they convinced me of this because it is a great light. It can open and shut which controls the amount of light in the room.
We’ve added lots more of their art work. I framed a koala bear that Conor drew and an eagle that John did in black frames with a white mat. I made the American Flag.
The kids are always creating and love to take art at Little House of Arts in the Harbor. Here’s two pieces they did down there:
I love their art! It always makes me smile.
John’s dragon is now hanging by the old pine chest.
Another new addition to the room is the desk chairs. Their desks came with stools but we just found they weren’t supportive enough while they were doing homework. The boys found these at Ikea and loved them.
I love that they mix wood and metal together. We seem to have a wood and dark metal theme going in the boys’ bedroom 😉
I’m so glad we added the angle poised lights and the wall mounted storage. It comes in handy for them doing school work.
I snapped a quick photo of John working:
Their room has some painted pieces that I created for them:
The union flag dresser is my old Ethan Allen Maple Dresser and I painted it years ago, gosh, almost 7 years ago now. Our kids are half American and half English.
It was one of my first makeovers with paint 😉
Above this bureau are old vintage nautical flags which I framed. I made the frames look old with Saltwash. You can read that post here.
The other painted piece in their room is this nautical subway sign chest. It has all of the Scituate beaches on it. My kids store their swimsuits in it along with sweatshirts for when it gets cooler at the beach at night.
This woven rug has also been great. It really gives a coastal feel.
The last update to their room are these reading pillows I found at Target during back to school shopping.
I had one of these when I was little, did you? It’s perfect for reading in bed. My kids are avid readers and love reading once we put them to bed. Sometimes John is still up reading at 10pm! John has a gray one and Conor a blue one – the boys’ favorite colors! They are super soft and perfect for reading.
Their room is perfect for them. It’s a mix of fun and practical and seaside charm.

I love that your boys share a bedroom! Our daughters shared a bedroom from birth until they went off to college. They are 3 years apart. After they both graduated from college, they shared an apartment for four years! They have such a close relationship! John and Conor’s bedroom is amazing…..you and the boys did a beautiful job!
Love your home? Big fans of Terminator, huh???? 😃
