Watercolor Sunflowers
I’ve been wanting to write this post for some time! I’m excited to share how to paint watercolor sunflowers, but also how to use these sunflowers in some pretty home decor!
I find sunflowers so happy and joyful. I love when they’re growing in our yard. These are my son, John’s favorite flowers and Conor, our youngest, actually created his own breed which was a dwarf sunflower crossed with regular sunflowers so we get teeny tiny sunflowers on really long stalks. They come back every year.
I also love to bring them into our home in bouquets but thought it would be fun to create patterns using these watercolors for home decor! Do you love sunflowers too? If so, read on…
Painting Watercolor Sunflowers
These are quite easy to paint. Pretty much draw a circle and use the watercolor brush to create the petals. This is a really fun and relaxing paint project that’s perfect for beginners.
What You Need To Create Sunflower Art
- Round watercolor brush – size 4 or 6
- Watercolor Paper – I used Canson XL Watercolor Paper
- Round Shape to Trace – I used washi tape
- Paints in Browns, oranges, and yellows. I used this Kuretake set.
- Palette – I used this enamel palette.
Sunflower Painting Step by Step
Step 1 – Trace a circle with pencil for the center of the sunflower
Step 2 – Paint circle using brown toned paints. Allow this to dry before the next step.
Step 3 – Drag your brush through orange or yellow hued paints to create the petals. Using the brush stroke to create the shape. See video for process.
It’s that easy!

Sunflower Fabric and Wallpaper
You all know how much I love home decor and interior design. For quite a while it’s been a dream to showcase my designs on home good products. I’m so excited to share that these patterns are now available on Spoonflower.
I created two designs from these watercolor paintings. One is called Sunflowers and is available as wallpaper, fabric, and on a variety of home decor.
The other pattern is sunflower stems and is also available on wallpaper, fabric, and home decor items.
More About Surface Pattern Design & Spoonflower
If you’ve followed the blog for a while then you know I started painting watercolors 8 years ago when my youngest started kindergarden. I absolutely love the medium. I began sharing free printables on the blog.
Then in 2019 John and I started our online shop selling note cards and we’ve slowly added more and more products, especially this year – boxed calendar, notepads, stickers, originals, and tea towels.
I really wanted to learn about surface pattern design which lead me to taking the Immersion Course and learn Adobe Illustrator. For designing I’ve been using a mixture of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I shared a little about this in my life lately post.
So while writing the blog and keeping up with home projects I’ve also been creating patterns. I have so many ideas of more things I want to do. Be sure to check back on my Spoonflower page because more will be added often.
Why Spoonflower
Spoonflower launched 14 years ago as a way for people to print fabric affordably and now the Spoonflower community spans artists, makers, creatives, and small businesses. Spoonflower prints products to order so there isn’t a lot of waste and they are ecological which is really important to me as we support nature and wildlife as part of our online shop.
- An eco-friendly process
- Sustainable operational practices
- Water-based pigment inks and dyes
- Initiatives that continue to lower waste byproducts
Their fabric, wallpaper, and home decor items are well made and printed beautifully.
They offer 24 types of fabric – ranging from cotton to recycled canvas, fleece to gauze and everything in between.
Spoonflower offers 4 types of wallpaper from peel and stick to grasscloth.
Finally, if you’re not really into crafts or wallpaper they offer beautiful bedding, dining, and home decor items. As a small business I would never be able to create this many product to sell.
I hope you enjoy this new aspect of Finding Silver Pennies. I’m so excited to share this with you!
