Wisteria Tablescape
Each year around the middle of May our Wisteria bursts into bloom. I thought I’d try to capture the beauty with a Wisteria Tablescape.
Winters here by the sea can be hard. Nor’easters blow into Scituate Harbor and our little town gets battered by winds, astronomical high tides, and mountains and mountains of snow. It seems like winter will NEVER end.
Summer sunshine and warm beach days glimmer on the horizon just out of reach.
But summer is nearly here again. Our once snow covered yard is filled with grass, blooming flowers, and the wisteria is twisting it’s vines and the flowers have unfurled. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen quite so many blooms as this year. It’s actually already grown in more since taking these photos but the flowers are starting to pass.
If you remember we had every intention of redoing our deck. The deck is very splintery but we can’t afford to do it currently. So we have one more year with this old deck and one more year with the wisteria.
About Wisteria
I love the wisteria but my husband doesn’t. It is very invasive. It looks beautiful for two weeks in May while the flowers bloom but then they go and the vine tries to grow under our shingles. It actually is growing under our sunroom and up the front of our house. Luke wrestles with it and cuts it back every week in the summer.
We have the Japanese kind but there is another less invasive variety. You might enjoy this post from two years ago.
It attracts all kinds of bumble bees and honey bees and I love watching them while sipping my morning coffee out here. Can you see the honey bee in the photo below?
Creating a Relaxed Entertaining Space
For this little tablescape I dragged out some chairs from the sunroom that were originally from Ikea to put at either side of the table.
The other chairs were from Target a few years ago but I don’t think they make them any more. They were from the Threshold line and called Holden.
I love to turn the string lights on even the day to add to the ambiance. Those were from Target.
Luke built us the cedar table 6 years ago and I love the weathered patina it’s taken on.
On the table I’ve place vintage fishing floats, a little candle and some gorgeous flowers from Cross Street Flower Farm.
The most delicate poppies and ranunculous all looks so magical. The pennycress so delicate.
In the above photo you can see our new sliding door. I took far too many photos of the flowers, but being surrounded by flowers makes me happy and I thought you guys might feel the same.
This is the first time I’ve brought my fishing floats outside on the back deck and love how pretty they look with the weathered wood. So very coastal…
The blue enamel pitcher is a Dutch antique. I found it at a consignment store years ago and that color just makes me so happy!
I would love to grow poppies in our own yard (our dog being named Poppy) but I haven’t had any luck. If you guys have any tips please let me know!
Using containers for gardens
I love filling our back deck with herbs and pretty flowers.
Vintage galvanized buckets make great outdoor containers.
John and I made garden markers with beach rocks.
I recenlty learned you can eat the chive blossoms so have been putting these in salads and am looking forward to making chive blossom vinegar and fried chive blossoms.
You will see there are some plants that are waiting to be planted out here. We actually got to that this weekend…
All those plants are from the Holly Hill Plant Sale. If you’d all like to see how our cut flower gardens and vegetable gardens are coming along let me know in the comments below.
Adding a few more decorative elements
John decided he wanted to start feeding the birds this year so he picked out this pretty bird feeder at Kennedy’s.
We seem to love that verdigris finish in our home.
I created that same look with paint on this compass rose, click here for the tutorial.
I hope this gave you a few ideas for adding some charm and character to your outdoor spaces. Let me know if you have any questions.
Your deck looks so inviting and pretty! 🙂
Thank you, Donna, I love how when the wisteria grows in it feels so private. xx
What is your wisteria climbing on to make it’s way around the deck? It’s beautiful!
We have it growing up metal poles / stakes and have run wire around the edge to help support it.
Yes yes want pics of gardens.
Okay, Terry, I’ll write a post with a peek of our gardens. 😉
Danielle–I just love your blog. Your home is so inviting & cozy. Every time I see that I have an email from you it makes me happy. The pics of the boys are precious. My two girls are grown & I would love to have them little once more. Your family is very special; it all goes so quickly, so enjoy, which I can tell by your posts that’s exactly what you are doing.
Hi Danielle, Your home is absolutely beautiful and so comfy cozy-looking. I love your back deck the way you have it set up but I especially love your wisteria tree. I ordered Wisteria seeds online around the beginning of the year. Planted the four seeds in separate pots. Kept them in my home till it was warm enough to take them outside onto my table under the gazebo. Well, the seeds have not rooted. I moved the soil around in each pot to see if I could find the seeds but there was nothing. I guess I got ripped off.… Read more »
